V-Belt & Timing Belt Drive
Calculate pulley speeds, belt velocity, transmission ratio and centre distance for belt drive systems.
Units:
Optimal belt velocity: 10–25 m/s for V-belts. Above 30 m/s centrifugal forces dominate, below 5 m/s efficiency drops. For synchronous drives (timing belts) maximum velocity is typically 40–80 m/s. Minimum pulley wrap angle: 120° on small pulley.
i = d₂/d₁ = n₁/n₂ | v_belt = π × d₁ × n₁ / 60,000 [m/s]
