Fieldbus Cycle Time & Bandwidth

Estimate the cycle time and available bandwidth for common industrial fieldbus and industrial Ethernet systems.

💡The effective cycle time is always longer than the theoretical minimum due to protocol overhead, jitter and processing time. For motion control, use EtherCAT or PROFINET IRT which achieve < 1ms deterministic cycle times. Standard PROFINET/Modbus TCP is not deterministic.
T_cycle = T_frame × N_nodes + T_overhead | Bandwidth_used = (payload × N) / T_cycle
ƒ Calculation module
Input
Fieldbus / protocol iSelect the industrial communication protocol.
Number of nodes / slaves iTotal number of connected devices (I/O nodes, drives, sensors) on the network.
nodes
Payload per node iProcess data (I/O) per node per cycle in bytes. Typical: 8–128 bytes.

Result
Typical minimum cycle time [µs]
Theoretical bandwidth [Mbit/s]
Effective data rate [kB/s]
Suitable for motion control
