Cylinder Volume, Speed & Flow

Calculate cylinder volumes, required pump flow for a target speed, or resulting speed from a given flow rate.

💡The required flow for the rod-end (retraction) is always less than for the cap-end (extension), because the rod reduces the effective volume. This difference must be considered when sizing a hydraulic power unit.
Q [l/min] = A [cm²] × v [m/s] × 600 ↔ v [m/s] = Q / (A × 600)
P P → F p × A
Input
Cylinder bore iInternal bore diameter in mm.
mm
Rod diameter iPiston rod diameter in mm.
mm
Stroke length iUseful stroke of the cylinder in mm.
mm
Target stroke time iDesired time to complete one full stroke in seconds.
s
Result
Cap-end volume [cm³]
Rod-end volume [cm³]
Flow required — extend [l/min]
Flow required — retract [l/min]
Cylinder speed [mm/s]
